One of the many Career ideas which have crossed my mind is to become an author. At first glance it looks like the perfect job. Being able to work from home, you gain all the pros that Careers from home offer. Presumably you will also be doing something you really enjoy as well, or else it would not be a thing you would genuinely consider! As with many New careers however, it can be quite difficult and tough to make a full-blown career out of it. You will have to be devoted to making it work. Just doing it because you hope to work from home, or doing it because you think you can create the next Harry Potter, will not work. For you to honestly consider this from other Career ideas accessible, you need to be committed to doing it because you want to.

If you de¬cide you really wish to become a recognised author, you may believe there is only one way to do, i.e. write a decent book. While this of course helps, it is not the only way, and there are several things you can do to help get your name known to publishers. This will be a good help when trying to get a book published, as publishers will respond better to a name they know or have seen. All Careers require you to start somewhere, and with publishing it is best to start small. Try getting little stories published in magazines. Compete in writing competitions so you can try and win some money and acknowledgment. If you’re currently working you may need to work this around your current career. Try taking a note book and pen with you anywhere you go, so you can jot down any ideas you might have whilst on the move. All New careers will involve some level of work to be done before you first start. You may be able to transfer some skills over from past Careers you have had, such as prioritising your workload, but for the main part becoming a full time writer will be something completely new, and you will learn more from experience more than anything.

Getting a couple of short stories published will be something you can employ to help get your name seen by publishers. It will also help provide you with some financial support if you are not currently working and still require money to get by. If you are working, the money will be an added benefit, and you will still benefit from the exposure.

The kind of content you are wanting to publish will have an impact on how you go about getting published. For just writing fiction of any kind, it can be very hard to get published. The genre you are writing for will influence how easy it will be for you to get published. At the moment the success of the Twilight novels has created a surge in popularity in the fantasy and romance genres. This can be good or bad news. Good news if you are writing for the genre in that, publishers might be looking to hop on the popularity bandwagon and might be more willing to publish related content. However, it might also cause the market to become bogged down with copycat books, and if your effort is even remotely similar to what is popular it may have a negative impact.
