For anyone who has never needed to write a cover letter, cover letter templates are a good idea. With the economy tanking and the unemployment rate at historic highs, competition in the job hunting arena is stiff.
It wasn’t all that long ago that job seekers could simply apply for any type of job online. Companies had their own application process on their own websites or even employment agencies allowed you to apply through them. It seemed no one wanted or asked for cover letters. Now, things are reverting to the old days when snail mail was the only way to apply, and the cover letter could make you or break you.
There are two major components in a cover letter that makes it worthwhile for a recruiter to read. The title, or “RE:” at the top of the letter, under the company’s address to which you are sending this, needs to grab someone’s attention right away. A good template will have something that reminds you how to fill this in.
Rather than typing in something like “RE: your job posting of June 13″, put something much more viable. If you are an accountant looking for a position in a niche industry and you do have the special qualifications the company is looking for, tell them immediately!
You will also need to hit hard with your first paragraph. This is really your first and only opportunity to provide vital information about how you are ideally suited for this particular position. If you believe you don’t have the writing skills needed to showcase your talents, you do indeed need to find a template program that will help you shine. Some employment agencies have a free template you can try but these are usually nothing more than a pre-written boilerplate into which you can insert some of your own information. It still needs plenty of editing before become a valuable job hunting tool.
Other templates can be found in books. For many people this kind of template is perfect. There are books on the market with hundreds of pre-written templates for just about any job you can think of from front desk receptionists to medical researchers. You’ll just need to be astute enough to figure out where to insert your own information to make the impact you need to make.
If you really don’t like to write, or if you’re so young you’ve never had much experience in putting together cover letters, you might want to check out some software programs that almost write the entire letter by itself, with some input from you, of course. These programs are very similar to those legal websites that offer to do wills and other legal documents for you after you answer some brief questions. When you’re done you simply hit enter, and a viable document is produced for you on the screen which can then be edited if needed.
Typically, these programs are designed like the popular tax preparation software. You are asked to answer a multitude of questions to begin with, and once you are done you are presented with a final cover letter that can still be edited for clarity. These programs also have different cover letters to choose from rather than one standard one you need to keep tweaking. You can usually save these and even edit the ones you’ve already done in order to apply to similar positions in the future.
If you want to make your own resume cover letter, you need to find the right way. Many people can tell you what to say in your resume in order to make it look professional. If you do it on the pc you can make cover letter templates that could spice up the resume.
