How To Avoid Plumbing Emergencies ?

Every home owner has to face some plumbing issues at some point of time or the other. Even in a newly installed plumbing system, issues like blocked drains, leaking fixtures and faucets can come up any time.

While you can’t prevent every emergency, there are ways to protect and maintain home plumbing to minimize complicated repairs down the road.

Leaky faucets and fixtures may indicate internal problems such as broken or missing o-rings or loose pipes. Taking care of minor leaks before they become worse is recommended to avoid future problems. By removing the faucet spout, you will be able to check the o-rings and replace them if necessary.

If your sink still leaks, you may want to call a plumber to do a routine inspection. Repairing minor damage quickly may save a lot of money later on. Fixing leaks can also save money in annual water costs and help save liters of scarce water in the process.

Take care of your drains. Plumbers commonly remove hair, grease and a wide range of unexpected items from drains. To prevent blocked drains, it is important not to put fat and grease down your kitchen drain, to avoid allowing excessive hair down your bathroom and shower drains, and make sure items like childrens toys arent flushed down toilets.

It is very important to check the main water valve as it controls the water flow of the entire home. The very first thing that you should do when you come across any plumbing emergency is to shut off the main water valve to prevent any further damage. Then you can call a plumber to fix the issue. The valve is generally located near the main water supply pipes.

One way to test the main water valve is to turn on the water in a sink or bathtub and shut off the main valve. The water in the sink or the bath tub should be immediately turned off completely. If it does not, then you must call a plumber to replace it as soon as possible.

You should never delay in getting any plumbing problem fixed as it can be very damaging later on which can cost a lot of money as well. So, consult a plumber whenever you think something is going wrong. Taking care of minor defects will help prevent any big problems.
