If you are about to embark on a New Career, you’re probably somewhat anxious, concerned about all the different things that may go wrong. What if you loathe it, perhaps you should have opted for one of the other Careers instead, what if you don’t make a good first impression with your new colleagues? There are a lot of things to worry about for individuals starting out on New careers, so I have collected a couple of useful hints and tips here to help people overcome those jitters, keep positive and help make sure they don’t let anxiety get the better of them when starting out on a new job or career.
One of the best things you can do is prepare ahead of your big day, and make sure you are completely prepared and geared up to start. It won’t help you being a bag of nerves on your big day, and then realising you haven’t properly prepared, and don’t know where to go, or how to get there, or realising you don’t have everything you need. Make sure you begin preparing several days in advance, in case you need to get something which could take a while to find. Starting out in a brand New Career or job will more than likely require that you take items along such as bank details, proof of identity or address, possibly a birth certificate or utility bill. Make sure you have these accessible, and ready to take along.
If your interview was in a different place to where your job is, set some time aside to make a practise run there, to ensure you know where you’re going, and so you have a good idea of how long it’s going to take you to get there. Take note of things such as parking availability if you’re driving your own car, or if using public transport, read the timetables well in advance. Knowledge of the route you have to take will help get rid of some of the stress.
If you’re changing Careers to something similar to what you presently do, then try not to get yourself too anxious about meeting up with your new colleagues. You need to remember these are, for the most part, going to be people with similar goals. So try not to be too stressed, and fret about impressing people – just be yourself. You’ll be more calm that way, and the more relaxed you are, the easier it will be to talk to people.
For people stating up New careers it can be a bit more daunting going to work for the first time, particularly if you have no idea what kind of individuals you are going to be working with. However, the same advice is relevant here – just be yourself, and relax, you are certain to make friends soon enough – you’ve been beaten probably lots of people to get to where you are, these people wish to work with you!
So there you go, just some advice on making your first day in your New Career or job a little bit easier – it’s all about being prepared, and being yourself.
