When it comes to the issue of electrical safety, one has to be proactive. Most common causes of domestic fires include faulty electrical outlets and appliances. Hence, it is mandatory to follow some precautions right from the start before it gets too late.
Kick off the inspection by heading straight towards your breaker box. The breaker box must be inspected once in every five years so as to determine any loosened switch or screw which can otherwise cause breakage failure that can consequently lead to fire.
If some exception is encountered in the normal operation of the box then call an expert electrician to handle the job. Trying to fix the problem yourself may only add to the complication.
A simple test to determine the correct working of the breaker box can be done by you. Just switch off and then switch on the breaker circuits repeatedly to see if its working fine. Also, look for the loosened screws and the breaker switches as they may pose a problem in the future. Tighten them immediately.
Generally, home-owners neglect the electric boxes once they’re installed. It is not a healthy practice at all since the electric boxes serve as the end or transition points for the electrical wiring. The electrical boxes as old as 20-30 years must be immediately replaced by the newer ones. The contractor/electrician may be hired for this purpose but do not forget to compare the bids from different contractors and also, the skills of the electrician must be taken into primary consideration.
To avoid any inevitable electrical hazard, internal wiring check-up has its own significance. It is wise to redress the internal wiring of the house if it is dating back 50-60 years. The process can be carried out along with a scheduled renovation of the house.
Along with these basic examinations, protection devices and tools such as fire extinguishers, surge protectors, GFCI protectors, Fire and Smoke Detectors etc prove to be very handy. During rain and lightning, commonly used electrical appliances should be avoided like hair dryers, telephones, ovens and geysers to name a few. It is sometimes tedious to adhere to all these safety measures but that is how safety is guaranteed to you and your family at the end of the day.
Electricity, if not utilized in the right way, can always switch you off literally and after all your safety is everyone’s responsibility, especially yours.
