The Motivations Of Being A Teacher

The teaching profession is a great career field in a lot of ways. But, keep in mind that since you are taking on the responsibility of educating children and teenagers, you will be quite involved in society and take on all the positive and negative that this entails. Knowing this, prior to taking the first step toward a teaching career, it is wise to go through your motivations to be certain that you have great reasons to teach.

The cons of teaching are also quite known. Teaching historically does not pay well, particularly if you teach at the public school level. You can find niche situations that pay well like working for a wealthy private school, tutoring or working for a “for profit” teaching operation. But for the most part, one does not go into teaching for the money.

That said it is also true that if you are a good teacher and your resume is strong, you can expect strong job security.  There is always a necessity for great teachers somewhere. Unlike going into business, you do not have to make your employer profitable to be a success teaching.  You are judged in lives and in the results of your teaching that is evidenced in the grades and strong academics of your students. If you can learn to teach young children and provide them with the skills to gain knowledge and wisdom, you will always have a job.

A lot of individuals get into teaching because they enjoy being in an academic atmosphere. For some people, they can’t wait to get out of school while others love the learning environment so much; teachers of course love this educational setting. So if you have an affinity for the social setting of a school system and the idea of taking up residence in a culture that the pursuit of knowledge is, at least in theory, the primary goal of the institution, teaching is for you.

Another motivation many have for going into teaching is love of your subject matter. If you have forever held a passion or a subject such as history, physical education, math, or art, you can feed that passion by passing it along with the knowledge about the subject. This is certainly true in an area of history and philosophy where there is no direct corellation in the business world. You help keep a subect matter important and alive by passing it down to other generations through your knowledge and passion.

Regardless of your main reasons to teach, teaching is a calling. A true teacher does not go into the field for the money or for a glamorous or exciting career. The excitement of teaching is seeing young minds come alive in class and to take youth people one step further along their path to becoming truly educated individuals. If teaching is your passin and gets you out of bed each day to go to school and face with the negative side of teaching every day, then you are teaching for the right reasons and you will be successful and remembered by your students as a super teacher.
