Accounting is for accountants and what’s more infuriating is they want to keep it this way, so it’s hardly suprising that individuals similar to me who run a small business and can’t and don’t want to pay an accountant found the shortcut I want to give to you here. People in startups tend to prefer doing more key jobs such as finding, understanding and keeping customers in preference to looking after their bookkeeping. Accounting is one of those arduous tasks that very few people relish doing but has to be done on a consistent basis to avoid problems.

Without even seeing the software I blindly went ahead and purchased the lowest cost system I could find. This was probably one of the worst mistakes I made as the software turned out to be really difficult to understand and use. OK my first piece of wisdom is that whenever you see the words accounting software proceed carefully as it probably means the designer isassuming you know a great deal about accounting.

Like me I know this just isn’t the case for the majority of small business people and this inspired me to put aside time that I didn’t really have to search for a solution to make my work easier. The second piece of guidance I want to share with you is my discovery of a really useful and free web application called salesorder.com.

Definitively the best application I have discovered, salesorder.com works on the web and is really well designed and of course lets me do my job anywhere I can connect to the net. Better still and the third piece of wisdom I want to share with you is that the people who work at salesorder.com are not just very knowledgeable of their application but they know a significant amount about the issues of running a small enterprise and have taught me the accounting I need to know.
